چکیده

We study convective motions taken from hydrodynamic simulations of rotating proto–neutron stars (PNSs) with respect to their ability to excite a dynamo instability which may be responsible for the giant neutron star magnetic fields. Since it is impossible to simulate the magnetic field evolution employing the actual magnetic Reynolds numbers (Rm) resulting from the hydrodynamic simulations, (smallest) critical Rms and the corresponding field geometries are derived on the kinematic level by rescaling the velocity amplitudes. It turns out that the actual values of Rm are by many orders of magnitude larger than the critical values found. A dynamo might therefore start to act vigorously very soon after the onset of convection. But as in general dynamo growth rates are non–monotonous functions of Rm the later fate of the magnetic field is uncertain. Hence, no reliable statements on the existence and efficiency of PNS dynamos can be drawn without considering the interplay of magnetic field and convection from the beginning. Likewise, in so far as convection inside the PNS is regarded to be essential in re–launching the supernova explosion, a revision of its role in this respect could turn out to be necessary.

Magnetic field amplification in proto-neutron stars the role of the neutron-finger instability for dynamo excitation

Aims. During the first 40 s after their birth, proto-neutron stars are expected to be subject to at least two types of instability. The first one, the convective instability, is excited in the inner regions, where the entropy gradient produces a Rayleigh-type convection. The second one, the neutron-finger instability, is instead excited in the outer layers where the lepton gradients are large. ...

Convection in protoneutron stars and the structure of surface magnetic fields in pulsars

We consider generation and evolution of small-scale magnetic fields in neutron stars. These fields can be generated by small-scale turbulent dynamo action soon after the collapse when the proto-neutron star is subject to convective and neutron finger instabilities. After instabilities stop, small-scale fields should be frozen into the crust that forms initially at high density ∼ 10 14 g/cm and ...

The Role of Leptonic Components in Spontaneous Ferromagnetic Transition of Neutron Star / Proto-neutron Star Matter

It is shown explicitly that a ferromagnetic transition of neutron star (NS) / proto-neutron star (PNS) matter in the β-equilibrium condition can actually occur if and only if the neutrinos remain trapped within the system, and perhaps it is necessary for the neutrinos / anti-neutrinos to carry some finite non-zero mass. It is also shown that electrons play a significant role in this transition ...

Dynamos, Super-pulsars and Gamma-ray bursts

The remnant of a neutron star binary coalescence is expected to be temporarily stabilised against gravitational collapse by its differential rotation. We explore the possibility of dynamo activity in this remnant and assess the potential for powering a short-duration gamma-ray burst (GRB). We analyse our three-dimensional hydrodynamic simulations of neutron star mergers with respect to the flow...

Formation of an Evanescent Proto-neutron Star Binary and the Origin of Pulsar Kicks

If core collapse leads to the formation of a rapidly rotating bar-unstable proto-neutron star surrounded by fall-back material, then we might expect it to cool and fragment to form a double (proto)-neutron star binary into a super-close orbit. The lighter star should survive for awhile, until tidal mass loss propels it toward the minimum stable mass of a (proto)-neutron star, whereupon it explo...
